TrueNAS Core Prod. - Overview
This month, I will be going over my TrueNAS Core setup at my Production site
Here's a quick run down on my Production TrueNAS Core setup, that I run from all my home storage needs.
Dell PowerEdge R520
8x3.5" HDD bays
192GB DDR3 ECC RAM
2 Intel Xeon E5-2428L 6 core 12 thread
14-10TB enterprise SAS Drives
140TB RAW capacity
120TB usable capacity
2 RAID Z1 Stripped together
NetApp DS4243 24 bay SAS2

Here's my primary storage pool, when I originally built this server I was under 60% full and now a year or so later I'm looking at upgrading it by adding another 7-10TB drives and expanding the pool capacity to 180TB usable space. The problem right now is the pool performance is getting much much slower than it was when it was empty or even 60% full the performance has drastically slowed down, I used to get 700MB + read and write now I'm lucky to get more than 200MB.
Here's my aging R520 Server, which I basically got for free I just had to pay for shipping, I did upgrade the CPU to the newest low-power Intel Xeon that it supported (E5-2428L) only draws about 110watts, and I populated all of the RAM slots with 16gb DIMMs for 192gb total. Officially it can support 32gb DIMMS but I already had a couple 16gb sticks left over so I just reused those.
To the right is my NetApp DS4243 which I also basically got for free I just had to pay for shipping. This is populated with a mix of refurbished enterprise SAS drives that I got off eBay. It connects to my R520 using QSFP (SFF-8436) to external mini-SAS (SFF-8088) SAS 2 cable connected to an LSI 9207-8E HBA.
